Four Courts Press has announced the publication of the fourth volume of the popular ‘Irish in Europe’ series, The Ulster Earls in Baroque Europe: the Irish in Europe 1600-1800.
This volume brings together material presented at the fourth international Irish in Europe Conference held in the Pontifical Irish College Rome in October 2007 to mark the anniversary of the 1607 ‘Flight of the Earls’. Eighteen essays explore the migrant Irish in Europe in the period 1607 to the French Revolution and explore aspects of Irish identity in a comparative context. The volume features an extensive range of images, some reproduced for the first time.
They include GianBattista Ricci’s contemporary fresco featuring Hugh O’Neill at the canonisation of Francesca Romana in Rome in 1608 and a detail, featuring the Monasteranenagh miracle (1579) by Franz-Joseph Spiegler in Zwiefalten (1747-52).
